Introduction

Adaptability, the quality of being able to adjust to new conditions, the ability or willingness to change in order to suit different conditions.

Wow, I have studied adaptability for some time and was surprised to see "willingness" as a component. This made me rethink at my core, was I truly "willing" to adjust, I mean was I going to put my "will" in play to get what I wanted. This thought was way bigger than getting it right because my belief was on display. We all have a measure of adaptability, its in our DNA, better said, we all want to survive, but adaptability is about much more!

Understanding Adaptability

Adaptability is a crucial skill for navigating inevitable changes, whether in professional or personal relationships, or even in societal shifts. It involves being flexible, open-minded and willing to embrace uncertainty, which today, everything appears to be uncertain. It really is the capacity to modify one's behavior, mindset, or strategies to effectively respond to new situations and challenges.

You know people around you who are adaptable because they:

  • They are open and positive

  • They bounce back quickly

  • They demonstrate thinking on their feet

  • They love trying new things, ala a challenge is a good thing

  • They always appear to be ahead of what's happening and prepared

  • They are receptive, like sponges

  • They view setbacks as opportunity

Cultivating a Mindset for Adaptability

Whether at work or at home, adaptability encourages:

  • Calculated risk taking

  • Managing long term goals into short term objectives

  • Live in balance, no right or wrong way, but moving forward without judgement

  • Highlight the poster children in your organization who demonstrate "yes we can!"

  • Encourage a flexible culture and different opinions

    • One of my favorite quotes by General Patton for WW2, "if everyone in the room is thinking the same thing, somebody is not thinking!"

Conclusion

You can train yourself to do anything! Your beliefs are powerful and being open to what comes, can truly lead to innumerable opportunities. Not only being open, but embracing what comes. Cultivating an adaptable mindset, invites growth which can lead to opportunities to grow your personal relationships, open dialog where you can hear other voices than your on. A willingness to change is a powerful testament to how you see and interact with life! Think about how you demonstrate being adaptable. Take some personal notes in a journal about your thoughts on adaptability and let your thoughts work you. You will reap the benefits of untapped new horizons awaiting your arrival!
